A re-elected Labor Government will provide $3.1 million towards developing Cooma’s mountain biking trails into a world-class destination.

This election commitment will support the development of 54 kilometres of new trails and the construction of a large-scale asphalt pump track to suit all skill levels on bikes, skateboards and scooters – which will have the potential to host a world championship pump track event.

With a drive time from Canberra conducive to either day trips or overnight stays, Cooma is perfectly located to capitalise on an increasing take-up of mountain biking across the general population.

Cooma’s terrain, forest types, existing quality trails, and the trail’s proximity to the Cooma CBD make this project ripe for development.

Mountain biking provides significant social and economic benefits to communities – with a 2016 assessment of the project estimating it would inject more than $5.3 million into the local economy every year once complete.

Consistent with past practice, election commitments will be delivered in line with Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles.

Quotes attributable to Member for Eden-Monaro, Kristy McBain:

“I’ve seen how transformative the development of mountain bike trails can be for regional towns – with successful projects off the ground in Eden, Narooma and Tumbarumba.

“This project would be a boon for local businesses – particularly the hospitality and accommodation sectors – with a significant influx of riders year-round.

“But it’s not only great for visitors – these trails and the pump track will be well utilised by Cooma residents of all ages.

“Congratulations to the Snowy Mountains MTB Club on its longstanding advocacy for this great project.”

Quotes attributable to Jan Wassink, President of the Snowy Mountains MTB Club:

“It’s great to see the commitment Kristy McBain has for the local area and the insight for a tourism potential such as the expansion of the mountain bike network.

“This project has been a long term goal for the Snowy Mountains MTB Club since its inception in 2016 – the potential of this expansion does more than just enhance the tourism experience in Cooma, it provides recreational benefits for local youth through the trails and pump track.

“The expansion would also tie in with other localities within the Snowy Monaro Regional Council area, such as Jindabyne, Thredbo and Tumbarumba, as well as on the South Coast, including Narooma, Eden and Mogo to create a greater South East region bike destination.”
