A new facility to provide women and children fleeing family and domestic violence is ready to accept clients in Cooma.

On Thursday 18 December Member for Eden-Monaro Kristy McBain toured the new accommodation facility, which can support 12 women and children at one time or up to 48 women and children per year.

Southern Cross Community Housing were awarded $1.2 million under round 1 of the Australian Government’s Safe Places Emergency Accommodation Program to deliver the accommodation. This funded the purchase of the land, demolition of the existing dwelling on site and construction of six self-contained dwellings.

Mission Australia will be delivering the specialist support services and will support all women and children.

Kristy McBain said it was great to see the project complete.

“The accommodation is needed across our community and I’m glad there will be services to help those in need.”

“I’m proud to be part of a government that is delivering crisis and transitional accommodation in regional communities, ensuring people have a safe place to go, which can be the difference between leaving a violent relationship or staying.

“Through this accommodation women and children will also be able to access specialised services and supports, which is so important when you’re in such a situation,” said McBain.

Through the Housing Australia Future Fund Crisis and Transitional and the Safe Places program, the Government is investing $1.2 billion in crisis and transitional accommodation for women and children fleeing domestic violence and for young people at risk of homelessness.

The Government is also investing $91.7 million over three years to June 2026 in the Reconnect Program, a long-running early intervention service for youth homelessness. Delivered by 70 organisations across 101 services, Reconnect provides family-based support to around 8,400 young people each year.
