The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Milton Dick MP and Member for Eden-Monaro Kristy McBain MP have launched the “My First Speech” Competition for schools in Eden-Monaro.

This national competition challenges students in years 10, 11 and 12 to picture themselves as newly elected Members of the House of Representatives and to write a 90-second speech, focussing on a topic of their choosing.

The winner from each year group will be accompanied by a parent or guardian and brought to Canberra to deliver their speech live at Parliament House.

They will also have the opportunity to participate in an engaging program tailored to deepen their understanding of the legislative process.

The submission deadline for this competition is 11:59pm Monday, 15 September 2025.

Kristy McBain said this was a great way for students to speak about something they are passionate about.

"I remember my first speech – it was such an honour to stand in the House of Representatives and talk about what motivates me and how I wanted to help make a different to the lives of the people living in Eden-Monaro.
