The Albanese Government continues to partner with Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council (QPRC) to deliver targeted road safety improvements in Eden-Monaro.

Honeysuckle Creek Bridge at Majors Creek is set to undergo an $836,000 replacement – beginning mid-August, which will boost road safety and connectivity in the region.

Supported by $668,800 from the Government’s Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program, along with $167,200 from QPRC, the existing 5.2-metre-wide bridge will be replaced with a modern, 8.4-metre-wide concrete structure.

As part of the project, QPRC has upgraded Monga Lane, which will serve as a detour during the bridge replacement – including road surface improvements, road widening, culvert upgrades and tree removal.

This project builds on road upgrades recently delivered thanks to federal funding, including widening and surface improvements to 1.4 kilometres of Hoskinstown Road outside of Bungendore – which received $600,000 from the Roads to Recovery (RTR) program.

An additional $421,216 through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCI) supported repairs to Hoskinstown Road at Trucking Yard Lane.

Construction of a new road and bridge at Halfway Creek has also been completed thanks to $1.5 million in LRCI funding – which has provided the community with better access to the Bungendore Sports Hub.

More than $2.4 million is being delivered to QPRC under Phase 4 of LRCI, with over $13.4 million in RTR funding flowing to QPRC from 2024-29 – a boost of over $5.8 million thanks to the Albanese Government.

This significant RTR funding increase will support a pipeline of future priority projects, and ensure that as a communities in Queanbeyan-Palerang grow, local road networks keep up with demand.

Nationally, the Roads to Recovery program is progressively increasing from $500 million to $1 billion per year. the Road Black Sport Program is increasing to $150 million per year, and $50 million has been added to the new $200 million Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program.

Quotes attributable to Member for Eden-Monaro, Kristy McBain MP:

“The Queanbeyan-Palerang region is fast-growing – placing more demand on the local roads our community use every day, which is why I’m working with QPRC to deliver the projects locals want to get off the ground.

“Upgrading Honeysuckle Creek Bridge is something the Majors Creek community has long called for, which is why I’m proud to be delivering this $638,800 – replacing the narrow bridge with a safer structure.

“This is part of my commitment to improve road safety across Eden-Monaro, and why the significant Roads to Recovery funding increase we’re delivering will make a huge impact.”

Quotes attributable to Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Mayor, Kenrick Winchester:

“We welcome the increase to Roads to Recovery funding and we will continue to partner with the Australian Government to make important infrastructure upgrades in Queanbeyan-Palerang.

“I’d like to thank the Australian Government for their support in upgrading this narrow bridge on Majors Creek Road.

“Regional roads and bridges are essential to our communities, providing access for tourism, trade, emergency services, and locals for their daily driving. This upgrade to Honeysuckle Bridge would not be possible without their funding.”
