The Albanese and Minns Labor Governments continue to partner with Goulburn Mulwaree Council to deliver high-priority road safety improvements, with $10.4 million flowing towards upgrades on Currawang Road.

The first sod was officially turned today by Member for Eden-Monaro, Kristy McBain, Goulburn Mulwaree Council Mayor, Nina Dillon, and Goulburn Mulwaree Councillor, Liz McKeon.

Made possible by over $5.7 million from the Albanese Government, and $4.7 million from the Minns Government – this project will support upgrades from the intersection of Braidwood and Currawang Roads to Browns Road.

Two narrow and flood-prone causeways will be replaced with new box culvert bridges, with 5.6 kilometres of the road’s surface to be reinforced and widened.

The Saltpetre Creek Causeway will also be upgraded, a turning lane to Goulburn Mulwaree Council’s principal rock quarry will be installed, and guardrails and line marking upgrades will also be delivered.

These safety upgrades will ensure that this regional road keeps pace with the growing community, that it is better equipped for the increase of heavy vehicle traffic, and that it is more resilient to extreme weather events.

Goulburn Mulwaree Council is currently undertaking site preparation works, with main construction commencing in January next year, and the project expected to be completed in May 2027.

It is one of many safety upgrades being delivered by the Albanese and Minns Governments in Goulburn Mulwaree, with over $2.1 million recently announced under the Road Safety Program for a package of improvements on Crookwell Road, along with Albert, Deccan, Clifford, Goldsmith, Verner, and Faithful Streets.

This is in addition to more than $9.4 million flowing to Goulburn Mulwaree Council over the next five years under the Roads to Recovery Program – a $4 million boost thanks to the Albanese Government, which is supporting a pipeline of local road improvements.

The Currawang Road project is supported by the Australian Government’s Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program, the Australian and NSW Governments’ Infrastructure Betterment Fund, and the NSW Government’s Regional Road Fund.

Quotes attributable to Member for Eden-Monaro, Kristy McBain MP:

“Improving the safety of Currawang Road is something that the local community has long called for – particularly after damage from significant weather events, which is why I’m proud to be delivering $5.7 million towards these upgrades.

“These upgrades will make Currawang Road safer for people travelling into Goulburn for work, school and community events – and will also ensure that this route keeps pace with increased heavy vehicle activity in the region.

“We know how important it is to invest in the safety of our regional roads, which is why I’ll continue working with the Goulburn Mulwaree community to advocate for their local priority projects.”

Quotes attributable to NSW Minister for Regional NSW, the Hon Tara Moriarty MLC:

“With more than 240 vehicle movements a day on Currawang Road, many of them heavy vehicles, this project will have long-term benefits for primary producers, delivering an asset that is less susceptible to road closures caused by floods and is safer for motorists.

“Through the Infrastructure Betterment Fund the Australian and NSW Governments are ensuring local operations are less exposed to disruptions caused by damaged public assets - events that can be costly to both their livelihoods and local jobs.”

Quotes attributable to Mayor of Goulburn Mulwaree Council, Cr Nina Dillon:

“This is a major win for our community and will significantly improve road safety and reliability for local drivers.

“We're thrilled to see this investment come to life, thanks to the strong partnerships with both the Australian and NSW governments.”
